Recently I stepped into the elevator with a beautiful woman. She was tall, probably in her late sixties, with silver hair fashionably styled and her makeup skillfully applied. She was dressed in a stylish black and white outfit which looked great with her hair. I’d seen her before. She didn’t look up when I entered.
“Wow! You look great!” I said to her.
“Ohhh…,” she sighed as she looked at me. “You have no idea how much I needed to hear that today!”
“Your hair is striking and that outfit just makes it stand out!” I continued. She smiled and thanked me for the compliment saying it was just the lift she needed.
We left the elevator at the parking garage exchanging “Have a nice day” goodbyes.
She didn’t tell me what was going on that made ‘today’ one in which she needed a boost. I didn’t ask.
This brief interaction reminded me that sometimes all it takes to lift someone’s mood or brighten their day is a compliment. I remember days when a random compliment added some pep to my step!
A compliment is free, easy to give and only takes a moment but the payoff can last all day! It’s a little way we can ‘do good’ and spread joy as we go through our day.
A compliment is a great way to make connections.
